The Gregorian Choir of Porto was created on December 3rd, 1995 (1st Sunday of Advent) through the gathering of former students of the seminaries of Porto which intended to preserve its cultural memory. If the "Veni Creator", sung in the Arouca Monastery, was the inspiring motet, the "Rorate caeli", in the Church of Lapa in Porto was the founder chanting.
Currently, under the direction of Deacon Joaquim Freitas Soares due to the death of its maestro and founder, Belarmino Soares, and has its headquarters in Trindade Church, in Porto, where it sings the Eucharist at five o'clock in the afternoon, on the last Sunday of each month.
Comprised of teachers, bankers, journalists, tradesman, with a total of 20 elements, it is dedicated exclusively to the interpretation of Gregorian Chants.
This choir has held concerts in many parts of the country at the invitation of universities, local autarchies, museums, associations, parishes and other scientific, cultural and religious institutions. It also held a concert at the Portuguese Parliament.
On two occasions it solemnized the "Pilgrim's Mass" in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela and performed the Eucharist in various celebrations at the Porto's See Cathedral. On May 9, 2012, it sang in St. Peter's Square in Rome. It recorded for the TSF radio station and performed on the public television channel RTP1. It is represented in the collection The Best Amateur Choirs of the Region - Porto. It recorded four CD's: in 2000, Rorate (sold out); in 2004 Gaudete; 2008 Ecce Mater Tua and in 2011 Cantate Domino.
