Colégio do Rosário Choirs

In addition to the curricular component, the Colégio de Nossa Senhora do Rosário's educational offer includes several regular activities dedicated to all the students' age levels: Instrument individual lessons, Choir, Bevel Flute Group, Orff Orchestra, Musical Workshop and String Orchestra. Throughout each school year, there are about ten auditions open to the community, three themed nights - Fado Night, Jazz Night and Rock in Rosário - and two concerts oriented to classical choral/symphonic choral music: the Concerto of Santa Cecília in November and the Easter Concert in April.

It is in accordance with this dynamics of the Department of Music that the Colégio do Rosário Choir and the Rosário Chamber Choir are framed, with the purpose of offering, also to the adult community, opportunities for regular musical practice, with a perspective of fruition and personal enrichment according to the potentialities and expectations of each one.

The Rosário Choir Chamber is, therefore, intended to constitute a space for personal development through the practice and sharing of good choral music, with reference to high standards of performative quality. In addition, it aims to promote culture through the presentation of music from different aesthetic settings, worldviews, geographies and periods, both in the physical space of the College and outside it. This group consists of teachers and other employees with musical and vocal training suitable to the objectives it pursues.

It started in March 2016 and its work is developed in the form of projects, so there are no regular rehearsals. Both the repertoire and the rehearsal plan for each project are defined together, with each element assuming responsibility for its own prior preparation. The base formation of the Rosário Choir Chamber is in octet, although it can be variable, according to the requirements of each performative project. It is coordinated by maestro Pedro Teixeira.

The Colégio do Rosário Choir consists of members of the Educational Community, namely students' families, teachers, employees and other friends. It was created in November 2001, with the objective of providing the educational community of the College with a space for musical development through choral singing. It is currently composed of about 50 members.

Marking its 15th anniversary this year, the Colégio do Rosário Choir has affirmed itself, in recent years, as a chorus to be taken into account by other similar institutions for the establishment of performative partnerships, among which the Academic Choir of the University of Minho, The Orpheon Académico de Coimbra, the Anonymus Choir, the Portuguese Orchestra of Guitars and Mandolines, the Sinfonieta Orchestra of Braga, the Classical Orchestra of the Center and the School of Music and Arts of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto.

The repertoire addresses different historical epochs and different aesthetic frameworks, in a plural view of artistic expression through music. Some of the current repertoire includes traditional Christmas music, excerpts from musicals, traditional Portuguese music, black spirituals and sacred music, notably Mozart's Requiem, Te Deum of Charpentier, Vivaldi's Gloria, Bach's Cantata No. 4, Mozart's Missa Brevis in D minor, and the Saint-Säens Christmas Oratory.

Under the direction of maestro Pedro Teixeira since its inception, it has acted in the most diverse contexts, inside and outside the Colégio do Rosário. We would like to highlight the participation in the Nativity Cycles (Braga, Coimbra and Porto), the Easter Concerts of Colégio do Rosário, the Bonjóia "Music Journey on a summer night Concert", as well as the great concert commemorating the 140 years of the College, which were important moments in the life of the Colégio do Rosário Choir.
