From the first half of the sixteenth century to the
beginning of the following century
Reacting to the painters who imposed the tradition of
a Flemish type of paint, the Portuguese artists of the second half of the
sixteenth century, with influences of the new models from Italy, altered these
values by introducing in Portugal a new Bella Idea of painting, first
impregnated with a Renaissance sensibility, then perfectly imbued with the
pictorial values of a Mannerist style of Italian inspiration.
We can, therefore, talk about an important generation
of artists perfectly aligned to the dictates of Italianate aesthetic. This
generation took charge of spreading to more remote areas of the Portuguese
territory these new tastes, now well integrated into the values held by a
triumphant Counter-Reformation and guided by assumptions advocated by the Council
of Trent.
Among the
abovementioned artists we should highlight the works of the Master of St.
Quintino, Francisco de Campos, António Nogueira, António Campelo, Cristóvão de
Morais, Gaspar Dias, Francisco Venegas, Fernão Gomes, Amaro do Vale, Simão Rodrigues,
Diogo Teixeira, etc.
From Diogo Teixeira are the paintings that belonged to
the altarpiece of the main altar of the Misericórdia of Porto Church, which we
will analyse with some detail and seek data that can synthesize the aesthetic
values that were discussed during that period.
